It’s race day in Austin, Texas as the Formula 1 United States Grand Prix gets underway at Circuit of the Americas.
Max Verstappen has already claimed one victory this weekend as he won the sprint in Saturday’s 19-lap race. To claim his 14th Grand Prix victory of the season, he will need to do so from sixth on the grid as he had a lap deleted in Q3 on Friday.
Three different teams make up the top three on the grid as Charles Leclerc is on pole. He has two British drivers closely behind as Lando Norris of McLaren is on the front row with Lewis Hamilton’s Mercedes starting P3.
The Sporting News is following the action live and providing updates from today’s race.

F1 United States Grand Prix live updates, highlights
Lap 39: Verstappen now leads the race as he gets past Leclerc at turn one. Norris then follows the Dutchman and is back in second.
Lap 36: The McLaren of Norris pitted for fresh hards on lap 35, Verstappen’s team reacted and brought him in for hards too. The Red Bull still manages to come out ahead of him!

Lap 33: Norris is now three seconds behind Verstappen and Hamilton is FLYING! He’s coming up on his fellow Brit.
Lap 28: Verstappen gets himself within DRS and dives down the inside for the lead of the race and holds off Norris.
Lap 25: Lando locks up and Verstappen is now two-tenths of a second away from having DRS. These next few laps feel critical to how the race may play out.
Lap 23: Lando is back out in front and he is on the hard tyre so he does not have to pit again if he can manage his tyres. Verstappen is closing in on him but the Red Bull will have to pit at least once more in this race.
Lap 20: Hamilton has pitted and he also puts the hard tyres on. Verstappen comes out ahead of the Brit and the Mercedes driver is frustrated with his team.
Lap 19: Hamilton is now leading the race as Norris comes in for hards. Verstappen is P5 and 20 seconds behind the Mercedes out in front.
Lap 17: Verstappen comes in for fresh mediums, so he will be committing to a two-stop race as he started on the mediums as well.

Lap 14: Lando’s lead is decreasing as Hamilton puts in the fastest lap of the race. The Mercedes driver is now within two seconds after being over three seconds behind just a couple of laps ago.
Lap 11: Verstappen gets the inside line and forces Leclerc wide but the Dutchman prevails and is now chasing Hamilton in second.
Lap nine: Hamilton, Magnussen and Hulkenberg have already had a lap time deleted and track limits could come into play later in this race.
Lap seven: Ocon is forced to retire for the third time in the last five races! Not the start Alpine would have imagined after their new investment this week.

Lap five: Verstappen is now in fourth as he also overtakes Sainz with the help of DRS.
Lap four: Hamilton uses his DRS down the main straight and breezes past Carlos Sainz to get himself into the top three. It does seem as though the Ferrari drivers are trying to manage their tyres early in this race.
Lap two: The Brit leads in the McLaren by two seconds and is pulling away from Leclerc. Russell hasn’t had the start he wanted and is down to eighth from fifth. Meanwhile, Max is coming up on the heels of Hamilton.
Lap one: Lando leads through turn 1 and is flying! Sainz is up into P3 and Verstappen is up to fifth.
Lights out: The formation lap is underway…
5 minutes from lights out: Lights out is next! Russell is hoping for a podium this afternoon and why not? He’s sat in P5: “Definitely up for a podium, Ferraris look like they struggled yesterday but Lando is going to be quick.”
15 minutes from lights out: It is HOT in Texas this afternoon which will make tyre degradation a factor today. The track is sitting already at 39 Degrees Celsius, the hottest it has been since Friday during qualifying.
30 minutes from lights out: It’s Lando Norris’ 100th race in Formula 1 today! He’s starting P2 and has just told Sky Sports: “I’ve got several plans, we have good pace. To get him [Leclerc] off the line would be an ideal scenario but that will be tricky. We learned many things yesterday but Ferrari are still a challenge for us, and so are Mercedes and Red Bull.”
45 minutes from lights out: He’s back and he’s beautiful. Ricciardo starts from P15 this afternoon.
We’ve missed him 🥰@danielricciardo is back in the saddle, and back in his natural habitat in Austin! 🤘#USGP #F1 @AlphaTauriF1 pic.twitter.com/brp64am01A
