Duke vs. Michigan State live score, updates, highlights from 2023 Champions Classic basketball game

By | November 14, 2023

Blue bloods will dance amongst the stars on Tuesday night in a matchup that has tended to produce fireworks.

Duke and Michigan State are set to duel at Chicago’s United Center, the host of the annual Champions Classic. It’s a clash that has slightly lost its luster over the past few days β€” mostly because the sides enter the contest with matching 1-1 records.

But whenever the Blue Devils and Spartans are involved, intrigue follows. Both programs fancy themselves national championship contenders, with Duke being spearheaded by the dynamic duo of potential lottery picks Tyrese Proctor and Kyle Filipowski and Michigan State already getting All-American production from veteran guard Tyson Walker.

DeCOURCY: Michigan State is Big Ten’s best shot to end NCAA basketball title drought

Things aren’t perfect on either campus; the Blue Devils suffered a last-minute collapse at home against Keshad Johnson and No. 12 Arizona, while Sparty fell stunningly to Sun Belt standouts James Madison.

Still, the talent is there to make things shake. What better place to put that on display than in the marquee TV event of the pre-conference season?

Duke vs. Michigan State live updates, highlights from 2023 Champions Classic game

(All times Eastern.)

7:40 p.m.: AND-ONE! A.J. Hoggard frolics to the rack, finishing through contact to bring the Spartans within one!

Blue Devils 19, Spartans 18

7:36 p.m.: Walker sinks a jumper from the corner, plus the foul! What a shot. We desperately need more offense in this one, especially given the fact that both teams have combined for a whopping 15 turnovers. Men’s college hoops are back, baby!

Blue Devils 15, Spartans 14 (5:48 left in the first half)

7:29 p.m.: This has been a low-scoring affair thus far, with neither side finding it easy to hit the target. Filipowski has been active, however; he’s already 2-of-3 with five points and an additional block, steal, assist and two rebounds. Not too shabby for the sophomore star.

Spartans 12, Blue Devils 12

7:23 p.m.: Magic Johnson is watching on, hoping his beloved Spartans put on a show. Hasn’t been the best of starts thus far.

7:18 p.m.: Michigan State’s defense has been foundational to its success thus far. Tom Izzo’s squad has held their opposition to 2-of-9 shooting so far. Too bad the Spartans’ offense has been similarly dormant thus far.

Spartans 9, Blue Devils 9 (11:45 left in the first half)

7:10 p.m.: The Blue Devils already asserting their dominance in the painted area. Filipowski and Mark Mitchell have already combined to swat two shots away. Could be a long night for the Spartans.

Spartans 3, Blue Devils 2 (15:56 left in the first half)

7:06 p.m.: And we’re off! Michigan State wins the tip! Malik Hall sinks from deep to open the scoring for the Spartans. Then, Filipowski responds with a fluid jumper from outside the block.

7:05 p.m.: Jon Scheyer returning home for this one. Should be interesting to see if he can have a fruitful homecoming this time around. Tip off around the corner.

6:55 p.m.: The House that Jordan Built should play host to a couple rim-rattling jams today. At least we hope it will. Tip off is only five minutes away…

6:30 p.m.: Tyson Walker getting shots up before tonight’s affair. If the Blue Devils want to capture this one, they’ll have to limit the talented guard’s ability to find space on the perimeter.

6:15 p.m.: Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at how tournament organizers turned the United Center into a palace fit for a champion.

6:10 p.m.: The Blue Devils are ready for war!

5:46 p.m.: Whole lot of talent slated to take the stage at the Champions Classic. ESPN Draft analyst Jay Bilas reckons 15 players competing in the tourney will hear their name called at the next level, including Blue Devils star Kyle Filipowski.

5:45 p.m.: The Spartans are on the scene in Chi-Town!

5:30 p.m.: Doesn’t get much bigger than this one. Duke faces off against Michigan State in about 90 minutes.
