Nashville SC look to exact their revenge on Lionel Messi and Inter Miami for the Leagues Cup heartbreak last year as they travel to Chase Stadium in Florida to contest the second leg of their CONCACAF Champions Cup matchup in the Round of 16.

After a 2-2 draw in the first leg last week, the tie is wide open, leaving both sides with a fantastic opportunity to advance in the continental club championship. Inter Miami hold the slight advantage, as their two goals in Nashville in the first leg give them the away goals tiebreaker unless Nashville match or beat that here.

Messi was rested over the weekend against CF Montreal, when Inter Miami suffered their first defeat of the year. However, Tata Martino confirmed that the Argentine is ready to start this CONCACAF matchup against MLS opposition.

There’s some needle to this matchup beyond being a rematch of last year’s Leagues Cup final. Messi was the target of a studs-up tackle by Nashville defender Lukas MacNaughton in the first leg.

Inter Miami vs Nashville SC lineups & team news

Lionel Messi was rested against CF Montreal in the loss last weekend, but Tata Martino confirmed that it was for pre-planned maintenance, and not related to the studs-up tackle from Lukas MacNaughton in the first leg of this continental matchup. Thus, Messi will be good to start in this match.

Inter Miami are without Benjamin Cremaschi and Facundo Farias, with the former recovering from hernia surgery and the latter working through his recovery from an ACL injury. Ian Fray and Franco Negri could both be back from their ACL injuries by the end of the month, but will likely be brought along slowly.

Inter Miami projected starting lineup (5-3-2): Callender (GK) — Gressel, Aviles, Kryvtsov, Freire, Alba – Redondo, Busquets, D. Gomez — Messi, Suarez.

Nashville talisman Hany Mukhtar returned from his early season injury in the first leg, and he will likely play a major role here. However, the visitors were dealt a major blow last week as critical defender Walker Zimmerman went down with a knee injury in the 82nd minute and will miss a number of weeks.

The only other player unavailable for Nashville is Randall Leal, who is recovering from a hip injury.

Nashville SC projected starting lineup (4-2-3-1): Willis (GK) — Moore, MacNaughton, Maher, Lovitz — Godoy, Davis — Muyl, Mukhtar, Shaffelburg — Boyd.

Inter Miami vs Nashville SC betting odds & lines

  • Moneyline lean: Draw (+350)
  • Score prediction: Inter Miami 2-2 Nashville SC

These two teams just cannot find a way to beat each other. They finished level in last year’s Leagues Cup final, played to a scoreless draw in their subsequent league matchup, and then drew 2-2 in the first leg of this CONCACAF Champions Cup.

With Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez starting the season in strong form, it’s hard to see Inter Miami tasting defeat, and they will know the away goals advantage gives them every reason to play for a draw as a win.
