Netherlands Euro 2024 squad: Ian Maatsen, Quinten Timber among players cut from final national team roster

By | June 8, 2024

The Netherlands followed host nation Germany in announcing their provisional squad for Euro 2024 on May 16, 2024.

Oranje head coach Ronald Koeman named a roster of 30 players, and this group has now been finalised as a 26-man panel for the tournament. The action gets underway from June 14.

The Netherlands reached the quarterfinals of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where they lost an acrimonious match on penalties to eventual champions Argentina. They made the Round of 16 at the last European Championship three years ago, but they suffered a surprise 2-0 defeat to Czechia in Budapest, meaning their wait for a major trophy now stands at 36 years.

If they are to become champions of Europe for just the second time, Koeman’s team will have to navigate an extremely difficult-looking group containing back-to-back World Cup finalists France. Their warm-up camp and friendly matches will therefore take on a high level of importance as players attempt to get match sharp following a long and arduous club season.

The Sporting News looks at the provisional roster and their schedule for the coming weeks.

Netherlands Euro 2024 squad and player roster

The big call for Koeman for the provisional squad was the decision to leave out Jurrien Timber, the Arsenal defender who has missed almost all of the 2023/24 club season due to serious injury. While he is back in full training, it was evidently felt that it would be unwise to rush the 22-year-old back for these finals.

His twin brother, Quinten Timber, was part of the provisional roster, having performed well for Feyenoord this season. However, he was one four players cut from the final group.

The others were Ian Maatsen, who has performed well on loan at Borussia Dortmund from Chelsea, plus the injured Atalanta midfielder Marten de Roon, and Sparta Rotterdam goalkeeper Nick Olij.

Experience in the squad comes from the likes of Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk, Girona’s Daley Blind, and Al Ettifaq midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum. Manchester City’s Nathan Ake will be another senior figure in the dressing room alongside the more youthful exuberance of the likes of Jeremie Frimpong, a star for Bayer Leverkusen in 2023/24.

There is no place for Joshua Zirkzee, the forward who helped to propel Bologna into next season’s UEFA Champions League.

How many players are in Euro 2024 squads?

UEFA regulations do not stipulate how many of those players must be goalkeepers.

Can Netherlands replace players on their Euro 2024 roster?

Once the final roster has been made official, changes can only be made due to injury or illness up until the team’s opening match of the tournament.

UEFA’s tournament regulations state: “Should listed players or goalkeepers become seriously injured or ill, they may only be substituted if both their team doctor and a doctor from the UEFA Medical Committee confirm that the injury or illness is sufficiently serious to prevent them from taking part in the final tournament.”

While any outfield players must be replaced prior to their team’s opening match, goalkeepers can be changed prior to their next scheduled game once the tournament is underway.
