Ben Shelton’s US Open title quest came to an abrupt end on Friday when he retired against Adrian Mannarino to a shoulder injury.
After sealing the third set with a thrilling point, during which he took a tumble, Shelton started feeling pain in the left shoulder.
A medical timeout at the beginning of the fourth set didn’t seem to help much as Shelton visibly struggled on court. With the third-round match level at two sets each, the American decided to withdraw.
Coming into the US Open, Shelton had reached quarterfinals or better in four of the last 12 grand slams he has competed in. In 2025 alone, he reached the semifinal of the Australian Open and last eight at Wimbledon and was looking to better the streak.
