The Atlanta Falcons and the Minnesota Vikings will duke it out for Week 2’s edition of “Sunday Night Football.” The Falcons enter the game 0-1, while the Vikings were victorious in quarterback J.J. McCarthy’s NFL debut in Week 1 against the Chicago Bears.
The Falcons’ offense got off to a strong start in Week 1. On their first drive, quarterback Michael Penix found Bijan Robinson in the flats, and the star running back took the short pass all the way in for a 50-yard touchdown. After an impressive first drive, the offense largely stalled, not scoring another touchdown until there was 2:17 left in the game. The Atlanta defense gave up a touchdown to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with 59 seconds remaining, but the Falcons got in Younghoe Koo’s range to tie it and send it to overtime. He missed the 44-yard field goal, and Tampa Bay escaped with a win.

After tearing his meniscus during his first rookie preseason game in 2024, J.J. McCarthy was finally able to take the field to begin his pro career. With all the time away from the field, the young quarterback looked like he had a lot of rust. He struggled through three quarters, throwing his first interception and pick-six. McCarthy then turned it on in the fourth quarter and showed why he was worth the 10th overall pick a year ago. He threw two touchdowns and ran in another to seal the 27-24 divisional win over the Chicago Bears.
On paper, this game looks like it was scheduled to be the Kirk Cousins revenge game. Unfortunately, the veteran QB hasn’t been able to beat out Penix in his second season. He will likely have to watch from the sideline as his current franchise takes on his former franchise on Sunday night.

As a result, he didn’t travel with the team to Minnesota and has been benched. Former Vikings kicker Parker Romo will handle the kicking duties for Atlanta on Sunday night.
