As co-hosts of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Mexico are heading into this summer’s tournament with hopes of a return to prominence on the global stage.
El Tri have struggled to retain their regular spot as the dominant CONCACAF nation and a regular thorn in the side for World Cup title hopefuls.
Mexico had reached the Round of 16 in eight straight World Cup tournaments before their embarrassing group stage exit in 2022, leaving the national team setup floundering for answers.
So who will be the players tasked with returning El Tri to the knockout stage where they believe they belong? The Sporting News brings you an overview of when that announcement will take place.

When is Mexico World Cup squad announcement?
Mexico head coach Javier Aguirre will announce his official 2026 FIFA World Cup squad on Wednesday, May 27.
As per FIFA regulations, competing teams at the World Cup were required to submit a provisional roster of players by May 11, and their final, whittled-down list no later than May 30.

How many players are in Mexico’s World Cup squad?
The final squad must contain at least 23 players and no more than 26. Thus, almost every team will carry the maximum 26 players.
The only other stipulation is that at least three of these players must be goalkeepers. Otherwise, Javier Aguirre largely has free rein over who to take to the tournament, with a few players locks to make the squad if fit while others are playing to make it in.
Up to 27 team officials will complete the traveling party.
Can Mexico replace players in their World Cup squad?
Teams are allowed to make a change to their squad due to injury or illness up to 24 hours before their first scheduled game of the tournament. Medical proof of the reason behind the withdrawal must be sent to FIFA for approval.
The Group A opener for Mexico is against South Africa in Mexico City on June 11, the first match of the entire competition, meaning any replacements would have to be arranged by June 10. After that, the squad is set in stone for the tournament.
The one exception concerns goalkeepers: if any of the three are injured or ill and has to withdraw, they can be replaced by another keeper from the provisional list at any stage of the competition (again, subject to FIFA ratifying the change).

Where is Mexico’s World Cup hotel and training camp?
The Mexico players, staff, and federation officials will have their World Cup hub at the High Performance Centre in Mexico City.
They began an early training camp there on May 6 for domestic-based players, and will welcome the rest of the squad from abroad once the roster is announced and the players have concluded their club seasons.
Other countries to have their home bases in Mexico include Colombia (Guadalajara), Uruguay (Riviera Maya), South Korea (Guadalajara), South Africa (Pachuca), and Tunisia (Santiago).
