EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ — Just like on Matchday 1, Erling Haaland put the finishing touches on a star-studded day at the 2026 FIFA World Cup as his brace for Norway in a 3-2 win over Senegal followed a multi-goal output from Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe earlier in the day.
While Haaland’s brace, following an opener from Marcus Holmgren Pedersen, put Norway level on points with France and set up a showdown for the group lead on the final matchday, the Vikings will be disappointed to see their two-goal advantage notably halved in stoppage time.
Norway were leading 3-1 heading into nine additional minutes, a result which would have seen them ahead of France on goals scored heading into the final day of group play, but Ismaila Sarr’s second of the game in the 93rd minute ruined that lead and leaves Norway needing to beat Les Bleus to top the standings.
For Senegal, they have been put in a serious hole ahead of their final game against Iraq, now only able to qualify for the knockout stages as a third-place qualifier by winning their group finale. They were defensively poor on the evening, especially captain Kalidou Koulibaly, who twice saw the ball pop off his feet leading to a Norway goal. He was not alone on the evening, as multiple times a Senegal defender failed to effectively clear danger leading to Norway chances.

(All times ET)
FULLTIME: Norway 3-2 Senegal
A very spirited fight from Senegal late in this match very nearly sees them level the game late, but they can’t quite get across the line!
Norway hang on for the three points, but they were unable to complete the job in full, seeing their slim tiebreaker over France evaporate and now need to win on the final day to win the group!
It clearly doesn’t matter to the European side, though, as Stale Solbakken celebrates exuberantly on the final whistle, charging out of the dugout and pumping his fists to the Norway-heavy crowd before bolting up into the seats to plant a kiss on his wife!
What a thriller!!!
90+2 min: GOAL! SENEGAL!!!
WOW! SENEGAL AS THEY DRAW BACK WITHIN ONE ON A GOAL BY ISMAILA SARR THAT HAS MASSIVE GROUP IMPLICATIONS!
Norway had the group tiebreaker had the 3-1 victory stood, but now they trail France on goal difference by one, meaning if this score holds, they would need a win on the final day to win the group, whereas before they only needed a draw!

90th min: Chance, Norway!
9:48 p.m. — A BIG SAVE BY THE SENEGAL SUBSTITUTE! Martin Odegaard skates into the penalty area along the byline, and he clips the ball to a teammate at the top of the six-yard box. While the ball is cut out by two Senegal defenders, neither can effectively clear and it falls to Oscar Bobb who fires towards the underside of the crossbar, but it’s tipped over!
Nine minutes of stoppage time are shown.
83rd min: Chance, Senegal!
9:41 p.m. — WHOA! Nearly a bicycle kick for Pape Sarr from six yards out, but the shot deflects off a defender and instead falls into the path of Nicolas Jackson who’s offside, and his effort is smothered by the goalkeeper anyways. That would have been spectacular!
75th min
9:34 p.m. — There’s a big penalty shout for Senegal, but the referee waves it away! Nicolas Jackson is hooked by Norway defender David Moller Wolfe, and wants a call, but none comes! It’s dicey from the Wolves player, but there’s just enough plausible deniability in it for VAR not to intervene. It’s probably a foul, but the referee lets them play on.
68th min: Hydration break
9:27 p.m. — Norway were under a bit of pressure for a moment after scoring their second goal, but Erling Haaland’s quickfire response has restored their command and Senegal look demoralized by that turn of events. Kalidou Koulibaly has been officially credited with two errors leading to goals, as multiple chances have come rebounding off his feet.
Erling Haaland has followed right in the footsteps of Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe earlier in the day, as Norway’s brightest star is shining again.
Young Andreas Schjelderup has entered the match to replace Antonio Nusa. Koulibaly has also mercifully been withdrawn, replaced by Pape Sarr.
63rd min: Substitution
9:21 p.m. — Senegal have had to make a goalkeeping change, as Edouard Mendy walks gingerly off. It looks like he landed very awkwardly on his right arm or wrist, and cannot continue. On comes Mory Diaw, while Lamine Camara is replaced in midfield by Pathe Cisse.
58th min: GOAL! NORWAY!!!
9:16 p.m. — THE VIKINGS STRIKE RIGHT BACK TO RESTORE THE TWO-GOAL LEAD! IT’S THAT MAN HAALAND AGAIN!
Antonio Nusa seems to get in the way of Haaland on the first opportunity off a cutback from the right, but the ball trickles to substitute Patrick Berg on the left side of the penalty area, and he squares it back to the big striker for a ninja-kick finish that clips in off the underside of the crossbar and bounces in!
It’s that man Kalidou Koulibaly again who has the ball bounce straight off his feet right back to a Norway player, allowing them to continue the attack! He’s had a NIGHTMARE performance!

53rd min: GOAL! SENEGAL!!!
9:11 p.m. — THE LIONS OF TERANGA HAVE LIFE! ISMAILA SARR SCORES TO BRING SENEGAL ONE BACK!
There’s a scramble in front of the penalty area, and somehow the ball squeaks through the scrum and Sarr slides to meet the ball just inches ahead of the arriving goalkeeper Orjan Nyland!

51st min: Chance, Senegal!
9:09 p.m. — The best chance of the game for the African side arrives as a cross from deep down the right flank finds the head of Nicolas Jackson, but he directs the effort straight at the goalkeeper who gets down to make the save!
48th min: GOAL! NORWAY!!!
9:06 p.m. — ERLING HAALAND HAS A SECOND FOR NORWAY AS THEY RUN A VICIOUS COUNTER-ATTACK!
Martin Odegaard goes nearly coast-to-coast, and at the final moment, with space to shoot, he instead slides it to the Man City striker. Kalidou Koulibaly slides and very nearly cuts out the delivery, but it skitters inches beyond his outstretched foot, and Haaland has a simple one-touch finish!

2nd half kickoff
9:04 p.m. — They’re back under way in the swamp of East Rutherford, and Norway has made a second substitution, with Patrick Berg of Norwegian side Bodo/Glimt entering the game for Fredrik Aursnes in midfield.
HALFTIME: Norway 1-0 Senegal
8:50 p.m. — Norway have the lead, but they should have had more, as Erling Haaland is baffled walking off the pitch! He can’t believe he’s just missed that chance right before the break!
A befuddled Haaland is shaking his head as he walks towards the locker room to regroup for the second half. We’ve got an entertaining one here!
45+4 min: Chance, Norway!
8:49 p.m. — WHAT JUST HAPPENED! Edouard Mendy gave it STRAIGHT to Erling Haaland for a wide open goal, but the Manchester City machine couldn’t convert, striking the near post from the tight angle! All he had to do was place it in the back of the net!
Then, moments later, Haaland gets another opportunity as Norway recycle possession, rising high like a salmon to head the ball on frame, but Mendy makes the save at the far post! Haaland should have had one there! What a missed opportunity!

43rd min: GOAL! NORWAY!!!
8:42 p.m. — MARCUS HOLMGREN PEDERSEN HAS THE OPENER FOR NORWAY!!! IT COMES OFF A HORRIBLE GIVEAWAY FROM SENEGAL!
Kalidou Koulibaly blocks an entry feed from Norway, but instead of collecting the ball and clearing it, he tries to just one-time boot it away, and whiffs, sending it right to Holmgren Pedersen who is standing right there and finishes past Edouard Mendy!

37th min: Chance, Norway!
8:37 p.m. — EDOUARD MENDY MAKES ANOTHER MASSIVE SAVE!
With zero width to speak of, Norway decide to play the ball long for Erling Haaland, and the delivery from the left by Antonio Nusa connects at the top of the penalty area. He touches the ball down brilliantly into the path of a charging Martin Odegaard, giving the Norway captain a massive opportunity with only the goalkeeper to beat, but Mendy charges it down and saves with his left knee!!! A top-tier stop!
34th min
8:34 p.m. — The game has ground to a halt since the hydration break. It’s not for a lack of trying, as both sides have attempted to get forward into the attacking third. Norway have counter-pressed in their own defensive third well to keep Senegal from building effectively, but the Europeans have also struggled to progress the ball themselves.
Alexander Sorloth is not a winger, and he has struggled on the ball. Senegal have recognized this, and are giving him acres of space so Norway feed him the ball before closing back down. Stale Solbakken needs to figure something else out.
23rd min: Hydration break
8:23 p.m. — As the first-half hydration break arrives, both teams have had good opportunities going forward. Norway have wasted two big chances, and down the other end, have largely kept Senegal in check, but there have been a few promising moves ahead that could have resulted in more had they managed to be more precise.
This is shaping up to be an entertaining affair whether we get goals or not. Hopefully the rain holds off for longer!
15th min: Chance, Norway!
8:14 p.m. — MARTIN ODEGAARD FIRES HIGH! The Norway captain has a clear sight of goal from about 12 yards out shaded just right of the penalty spot, but he blasts it miles over the crossbar as he crashes onto the ball! The chance came from the substitute Pedersen, who made an overlapping run behind Alexander Sorloth and cut it back to Odegaard.
13th min: Substitution
8:12 p.m. — Norway’s right-back Julian Ryerson has pulled up with a muscle injury and cannot continue, needing to be replaced. He is brought off while Marcus Holmgren Pedersen is brought on. The Norway fans chant their fallen comrade’s name as he walks slowly behind the goal en route to the bench.
3rd min: Chance, Norway!
8:03 p.m. — KRISTOFFER AJER TESTS EDOUARD MENDY! Norway have three successive corners, and the third sees Julian Ryerson whip one in from the near side and finds the head of the Brentford center-back right in front of goal, and he rises high to direct it on goal, but it’s right at the Senegal goalkeeper from point-blank range!

Kickoff
8 p.m. — We’re under way at MetLife Stadium! The rain has held off for now, and the radar looks promising, so hopefully we can get this full match in!
Prematch
7:45 p.m. — The Viking Row has made its way to MetLife Stadium! It’s almost 90% Norway fans here in East Rutherford, as the European side will have a significant home-field advantage with spectators still filling in. Kickoff is right around the corner!

7:30 p.m. — They have announced in Philadelphia that the France vs. Iraq match will resume at 7:50 p.m. ET. That means we will have simultaneous games being played in Group I, with this game set to kick off at the top of the hour.
7:15 p.m. — Erling Haaland has one of the most incredible goal tallies in international soccer history. He has thus far accomplished something incredibly rare — more goals than games in over 50 international caps. It’s an astonishing record that continues to impress the longer it goes on.
Can he add to that tally today?
7 p.m. — The match between France and Iraq was supposed to resume play at 7 p.m., with the weather supposedly having cleared up in Philadelphia. But another lightning strike has restarted the 30-minute timer, so they are still going. The radar looks relatively safe for this game at MetLife, but an extended delay in nearby Philadelphia is foreboding nonetheless.
6:45 p.m. — Starting lineups are in, and both sides enter this match exactly as expected. There are no surprises whatsoever, as Erling Haaland and Nicolas Jackson will lead the lines up front as a central striker. Stars on both sides dot the lineups, as Martin Odegaard, Sadio Mane, Kalidou Koulibaly, and Ismaila Sarr all start.
6:30 p.m. — The game between France and Iraq has now been suspended for inclement weather at halftime. That weather may be on its way here to East Rutherford. Foreboding.

6 p.m. — The rain has cleared up for now, but there could be more on the way later. Philadelphia is dealing with similar weather, where a Kylian Mbappe goal has France up 1-0 on Iraq early. That leaves just Erling Haaland as the superstar goal scorer in play today to find the net, after Lionel Messi’s brace earlier!
5 p.m. — The gates have opened here at MetLife Stadium, and already a heavy contingent of Norway fans have begun streaming into the venue! Their Viking Row has taken over New York City over the past few days, I’m sure we’ll see it at some point in the stadium as well!

4 p.m. — There is a significant chance of the first weather delay of the World Cup today. The conditions in East Rutherford are miserable right now, and the forecast doesn’t have it getting much better. They are already running shelter-in-place protocol inside the stadium and gates don’t even open to fans for another hour.

3 p.m. — Senegal fell victim to France’s star power in their opening game, as Michael Olise ran the show and Kylian Mbappe finished off two fabulous goals. They will hope to avoid the same fate here, as Erling Haaland and Martin Odegaard are off to a strong start for Norway in the same regard.
