Canada vs. Switzerland live score, result, highlights as Switzerland take lead in 2026 World Cup Group B match

By | June 24, 2026

Having confirmed a place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup knockout round, co-hosts Canada now seek the top spot in Group B as Les Rouges take on Switzerland in Vancouver on Wednesday to conclude group stage play.

Jesse Marsch has led Canada to four points from their first two matches, the country’s first-ever points at a FIFA World Cup. Now, level on points with Switzerland and holding a superior goal differential, all Canada need is a draw and they will advance as group winners, a significant advantage when it comes to knockout bracket placement.

Switzerland, meanwhile, must win to top the group, since their +3 goal differential is inferior to Canada’s +6 mark.

The winner of Group B will take on a third-place qualifier from either Groups E, F, G, I, or J in the Round of 32, while the Group B runner-up will meet the runner-up from Group A, likely to be South Korea.

Canada vs. Switzerland live updates, highlights from 2026 World Cup

46th min: GOAL! SWITZERLAND!

4:06 p.m. ET — RUBEN VARGAS HAS THE OPENER JUST 50 SECONDS INTO THE SECOND HALF!

A cross from the right deep down near the end line evades the target in front of goal, but as it squirts through, it falls to Vargas who is completely wide open at the far post, and he finishes inside the woodwork before the trailing defender can arrive!

Alistair Johnston had crashed the striker in front of goal, and there was nobody there to cover the back post!

2nd half kickoff

4:05 p.m. ET — They’re back under way in Vancouver, where there are no changes for either team.

HALFTIME: Canada 0-0 Switzerland

At the end of a cagey 45 minutes, the teams are level! Both sides have had their chances, with most of them coming in the first half-hour, but neither team had the quality to find the back of the net.

Switzerland were the better side through the opening 20 minutes, but they couldn’t capitalize and Canada grew into the game. The two midfielders Nathan Saliba and Mathieu Choiniere decided to sag off a bit and provide less pressure, and that helped Canada protect the back line better and keep the game in front of them.

Remember, Canada just need a draw to top the group!

33rd min: Chance, Canada!

3:33 p.m. ET — Cyle Larin goes for goal from about 12 yards out, but he puts it low and straight at the goalkeeper! There’s a good opening to shoot, but he fails to get the quality on the effort!

31st min: Yellow card

3:31 p.m. ET — Cyle Larin and Granit Xhaka are both shown yellow cards, for some extra-curricular activity. Larin was trying to block Switzerland from taking a free-kick, and Xhaka kicked it right into him. It kicks off some pushing and shoving between both teams, but the referee handles it before things really kick off.

24th min: Hydration break

3:23 p.m. ET — They’re level at the hydration break, which will please Canada as they have been porous on some occasions. Maxime Crepeau has made two big saves, first on the early Breel Embolo chance and again on another opportunity for the Switzerland striker which was scuffed right at the goalkeeper a few minutes later.

Canada are pressing much less than they have in the first two games, knowing their midfield isn’t quite of the same level without both Eustaquio and Kone.

11th min: Chance, Switzerland!

3:11 p.m. ET — MAXIME CREPEAU DENIES BREEL EMBOLO! A STUNNING SAVE!

The Swiss striker is threaded clean through on goal by a diagonal ball from the left, with only the keeper to beat, but his effort is parried by Crepeau who denies the opener! Then, a follow-up effort is blocked by a defender straight after!

Kickoff

3 p.m. ET — They’re under way in Vancouver! The red in the crowd is almost entirely pro-Canada, as you can imagine given the co-hosts are on home soil, but it’s a bit of a weird look as Canada are wearing white today, while Switzerland are in red.

Prematch

30 mins to kickoff (2:30 p.m. ET): Ismael Kone is here in a wheelchair and ready to support Canada the rest of the way. The fans and team are all behind him too, as evident by the many Kone jerseys in the crowd and at the march to the stadium. He’s become an emotional inspiration to the players, and someone the fans can rally behind!

1 hour to kickoff (2 p.m. ET): Lineups are in! Switzerland has made a bunch of changes, as head coach Murat Yakin has brought in a trio of players who turned the tide last time out off the bench.

Ruben Vargas and Johan Manzambi both picked up two goal contributions in substitute roles against Bosnia & Herzegovina, and are brought into the lineup, while Djibril Sow also starts.

Interestingly for Canada, captain Stephen Eustaquio does not start in midfield, having struggled with some minor fitness issues midweek. That means Jesse Marsch has changed both his starting midfield duo, with Ismael Kone’s injury ruling him out for months.

1 hour 30 mins to kick (1:30 p.m. ET): After the devastating injury to Ismael Kone last match, Nathan Saliba will be the likely individual to take over in midfield. Lineups will be released shortly, but he is expected to take the spot vacated next to Stephen Eustaquio.

2 hours to kickoff (1 p.m. ET): It’s an incredible scene in Vancouver where Canada fans are marching to the stadium!

3 hours to kickoff (12 p.m. ET): One player Canada must stop if they are to get a result today is Switzerland midfielder Granit Xhaka, whose passing range is absurd, especially when his team is in uncontested possession of the ball.

As of June 20, according to Opta, Xhaka had delivered the second-most line-breaking passes of any player at the World Cup, behind only Arda Guler of Turkey.

4 hours to kickoff (11 a.m. ET): Qatar manager Julen Lopetegui was reportedly very upset at Canada head coach Jesse Marsch for Les Rouges running up the score while their opponents had been reduced to nine men. This apparently led to their touchline clash at full-time, when Lopetegui appeared to be lecturing Marsch about something before the Canada boss threw up his hands and stormed off.

That is, of course, a patently absurd thing for a national team manager at a World Cup to be angry about. It’s the World Cup, the most competitive environment football has to offer. If you can’t handle the heat, get out of the kitchen.

That big result has real, genuine competitive implications for Canada. They now hold the goals differential tiebreaker over Switzerland, meaning they just need a draw today to win the group.

5 hours to kickoff (10 a.m. ET): Canada’s 6-0 win over Qatar came at a high price, as the gruesome leg fracture suffered by Ismael Kone has remained burned in the memories of players and fans. Head coach Jesse Marsch talked about that moment after the game, saying the Qatar player Assim Madibo entered the Canada locker room to apologize to the host nation’s squad. He also met up with Kone later to talk things out, as Madibo was reportedly “very affected” by the incident.
