On the surface, the Week 6 matchup between the Patriots and Cowboys might not seem overly compelling. Dallas is 4-1 and squarely atop the NFC East, while New England is 2-3 and in second place in the AFC East.

Maybe it will be a lopsided affair. But it’ll also be a good barometer for both teams.

Dallas is one of the most prolific offensive squads in the NFL. Through five weeks, the Cowboys rank second in scoring offense (34.0 points per game) and total yards (439.6 yards per game), thanks in large part to quarterback Dak Prescott and the running back tandem of Ezekiel Elliott and Tony Pollard. Prescott is third in the league in passing touchdowns (13) and 11th in passing yards (1,368), while Elliott is tied for second in rushing touchdowns (five) and third in rushing yards (452).

But the Cowboys are going up against a Patriots team that boasts one of the better defensive units in the game, one that gives up the fifth-fewest points this year (18.4 points per game). Offensively, the Patriots have been unremarkable; quarterback Mac Jones has his work cut out for him against a Cowboys secondary that features NFL interceptions leader Trevon Diggs.

It’s the third tough game for Jones against a quality opponent in four weeks, and though he doesn’t have gaudy numbers, he has done what has been asked of him, executing the Patriots offense as well as any first-year quarterback could have.

The Cowboys will stay atop their division regardless of the result, while a win pushes New England to .500 and gives them a second straight win. A loss for the Patriots will drop them to 2-4, and could put them even further behind AFC East leader Buffalo.

5:26 p.m.: On second-and-10, Dallas converts again, this time on a pass out of the backfield to Elliott. Cowboys are at the New England 26.

5:22 p.m.: The Patriots turn It over after Randy Gregory forces the fumble on the strip sack and the Cowboys recover. Dallas takes over at its own 48.

5:20 p.m.: Mac Jones airs it out and finds Nelson Agholor on second-and-5 for 27 yards. The Patriots are now squarely in Dallas territory at the Cowboys’ 25.

5:14 p.m.: INTERCEPTION NEW ENGLAND. Prescott was looking for Wilson in the end zone but ends up getting picked off. New England takes over at its own 25.

5:11 p.m.: It’s third-and-9 from the New England 16 and Dallas calls a timeout with 12:58 left in the second quarter.

End first quarter: New England 14, Dallas 7

5:07 p.m.: On second-and-11 from the New England 41, Prescott hits Amari Cooper for 11 yards to end the first quarter.

5:06 p.m.: Prescott hits Cedrick Wilson for 44 yards but it’s called back after a penalty. Now first-and-20 for Dallas from their own 40.

5:04 p.m.: An injured player on the field as the game goes to a TV timeout.

4:58 p.m.: The Cowboys are looking at their second fourth-and-short of the day from their own territory. It’s at their 47 and this time its good as Ezekiel Elliott breaks off an outside run and picks up just enough. First-and-10 from right at midfield.

4:54 p.m.: TOUCHDOWN PATRIOTS. Mac Jones hits Hunter Henry to give the Patriots the lead again for the second time this quarter. New England 14, Dallas 7.

4:52 p.m.: Dallas cornerback Trevon Diggs gets flagged for 15 yards. Puts the Patriots on the Dallas 20 and they look to score again.

4:45 p.m.: TOUCHDOWN COWBOYS. Prescott hits tight end Blake Jarwin wide open in stride in the back of the end zone. It’s Dak’s 14th TD pass of the year and it ties the game. He was 6-for-6 to five different targets. Dallas 7, New England 7.

4:43 p.m.: Dallas keeps marching. Three straight first downs on this drive so far.

4:41 p.m.: After the touchdown, Dallas takes over at its own 25.

4:37 p.m.: TOUCHDOWN PATRIOTS. The Patriots line up for a trick play with Damien Harris lining up under center for the snap. He keeps it and barrels through for 4 yards and an early score. New England 7, Dallas 0 with 10:20 left in the first.

4:34 p.m.: The Cowboys lose their challenge. Ezekiel Elliott is ruled down by contact and it’s a turnover on downs for the Cowboys. New England takes over on the Dallas 34 and primed to score early.

4:28 p.m.: Dallas was staring at first-and-20 from its own 15 and they get it all the way down to fourth-and-1. The Cowboys go for it and don’t get it, but Dallas coach Mike McCarthy challenges.

4:26 p.m.: There’s a penalty on the opening kickoff and the Cowboys start at the 12 yard line.
