Marvel’s Spider-Man Is Such A Big Nerd Crossover
Considering how often we review Marvel movies/shows and new Magic: The Gathering sets here at Sci-Fi Bloggers, it feels extremely fitting to go over the upcoming (like, coming out this month) Marvel’s Spider-Man cards. They are even—somehow—Standard legal, so anyone playing that format on Arena is going to run into these options.
But which ones are actually good from a gameplay perspective? Sure, the art, flavor, and creative interpretations of these characters as Magic cards are amazing—and I can only imagine how much an entrenched comic book fan is enjoying them. But I am a Standard player first, and that’s how I’m going to evaluate them—not by how iconic the character is.
The way we’re going to do this for Marvel’s Spider-Man is the same way as many other card reviews we’ve done, with it being broken down into sets of five per article, in alphabetical and WUBRG order, then multis, then lands (there weren’t any artifacts good enough to make the list).
So, ready? Because it’s time for two nerdy fandoms to collide.
Anti-Venom, Horrifying Healer
This isn’t that different from Phyrexian Vindicator—and is in some ways worse—but I’m not comparing across sets here, and a creature that can tank massive monsters is always helpful. I’m almost as big a fan of Anti-Venom’s revival ability as I am of his durability, though, as it’s a great way to stabilize turn five in a monowhite deck.
Aunt May
I’d like this card from Marvel’s Spider-Man even without the +1/+1 ability—though that is an amazing perk sometimes. Cards that gain passive life have been a part of Standard for a long time for good reason.
Origin of Spider-Man
Sagas are often not impressive unless they really affect the board. This, thankfully, gives you a creature right away. I can see it in some kind of low-to-the-ground aggro build, as you can pump up your attackers in various ways as it progresses.
Hide on the Ceiling
This is a combo card. Yes—like the flavor suggests—you can use it to save your creatures and artifacts from whatever would destroy them. But the real use is the same that we saw back with Yorion in Ikoria. Exile everything that cares about “enters the battlefield” and then enjoy the value.
Lady Octopus, Inspired Inventor
This is absurdly good. Like, I cannot see a way someone doesn’t break this card wide open. Every turn, this gets at least one counter, assuming a blue artifact deck doesn’t draw extra cards. This card can take over entire games.
