Apple has teamed up with A24 to produce a new sci-fi drama film titled Bride with Academy Award-nominated actress Scarlett Johansson (Marriage Story, MCU) officially signing on to lead the project. This marks Apple’s latest collaboration with the critically-acclaimed studio following the most recent release of Sofia Coppola’s comedy drama On the Rocks which starred Bill Murray and Rashida Jones.

“It is long overdue for Bride to step out of the shadow of her male counterpart and stand alone,” Johansson said in a statement (via The Hollywood Reporter). “Working alongside Rebecca Angelo and Lauren Schuker Blum, Sebastian and I are extremely excited to emancipate this classic anti-heroine and reanimate her story to reflect the change we see today.”

Inspired by the classic monster Bride of Frankenstein, Bride is being described as a story centered around a woman that was created to be an ideal wife by a brilliant entrepreneur. When she rejects her creator, she’s forced to flee her confined existence, confronting a world that sees her as a monster. While on the run, she finds her true identity, her surprising power and the strength to remake herself as her own creation.

The sci-fi drama will be directed by Sebastián Lelio (Disobedience, Gloria), who is also co-writing the script with Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo. On top of starring, Johansson is also set to serve as a producer along with Jonathan Lia through their These Pictures banner.

Johansson is no stranger to the sci-fi genre as she previously starred in well-received films such as Her, Under the Skin and Lucy as well as the controversial and box office disappointment 2017’s Ghost in the Shell. She also gained worldwide recognition for her role as Black Widow in the Marvel Studios’ blockbuster MCU films. Not only is she a blockbuster star, she is also known for her critically-acclaimed performances in Ghost World, Lost in Translation, Vicky Cristina Barcelona, Marriage Story and Jojo Rabbit.
