John David Washington to Star in Gareth Edwards' Sci-Fi Pic True Love

Coming off from his leading performance in Christopher Nolan’s latest film Tenet, Golden Globe nominee John David Washington has found his next sci-fi project in the form of New Regency’s upcoming film titled True Love. According to Deadline, the 36-year-old actor has officially signed on to star in Gareth Edwards’ directorial comeback film in nearly five years since directing Lucasfilm’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. True Love will be written and directed by Gareth Edwards. It will be produced by Edwards and Kiri Hart with New Regency set to produce and finance the project. This marks Washington and New Regency’s latest collaboration, who are also working together on David O. Russell’s star-studded period drama led by Christian Bale and Margot Robbie.

Edwards first gained critical acclaim for his feature-length directorial debut Monsters in 2010. After that, he landed his first high-profile project for Legendary as the director for 2014’s Godzilla, the first film in the studio’s MonsterVerse franchise. Due to the box-office success of Godzilla, he was then tapped by Lucasfilm to helm the first installment to the Star Wars anthology films titled Rogue One which starred Felicity Jones and Diego Luna.

Washington first gained recognition for being a part of the main cast for HBO’s Dwayne Johnson-led sports drama Ballers. However, his acting breakthrough came when he led Spike Lee’s award-winning dark comedy film BlacKkKlansman in 2018. For his performance as Ron Stallworth, he earned his first Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor. He was also recently seen in Netflix’s romantic drama Malcolm & Marie, starring opposite Emmy winner Zendaya.
