The wide-open nature of this year’s NCAA baseball tournament will be on full display Friday as the College World Series begins in Omaha.
Game 1 features a pair of first-time CWS participants as No. 16 national seed West Virginia meets Troy. The Trojans emerged from a regional featuring powerhouses Florida and Miami before sweeping fellow upstart Little Rock in the super regionals. The Mountaineers had a slightly smoother path, spending the first two round at home as they poured on the runs against Cal Poly to sweep their super regional.
Friday night will see North Carolina, the second-highest seed remaining at No. 5, open its CWS run against Ole Miss. The Tar Heels had to come from behind in the ninth to defeat USC in Game 3 of the super regional, while Ole Miss swept No. 4 seed Auburn in Alabama.
