Giannis Antetokounmpo trade details: How Heat won sweepstakes to land Bucks superstar

By | June 23, 2026

After 13 years, one championship and two MVP awards, Giannis Antetokounmpo’s time with the Milwaukee Bucks has come to an end.

The Bucks traded Antetokounmpo to the Miami Heat in a blockbuster trade on Monday night, officially parting with a franchise legend who powered the team to an NBA championship in 2021.

The move was a long time coming. Reports in the weeks and months leading up to February’s trade deadline indicated Antetokounmpo was open to moving on from the Bucks, if not fully ready for a change of scenery. The Bucks discussed deals but ultimately kicked the can to the offseason, with talks recently heating up again before a deal was struck.

Milwaukee’s roster crumbled around Antetokounmpo in the years following the 2021 title, and aggressive moves to bring in Damian Lillard and later Myles Turner failed to translate into wins. Now, Antetokounmpo is starting fresh with the goal of winning a second championship.

Here are the full details of the Heat trade to acquire Antetokounmpo.

Giannis Antetokounmpo contract details

Antetokounmpo just played out the first year of a three-year, $175.4 million contract extension and carries a cap hit of $58.5 million for the 2026-27 season.

Because the third year of the deal is a $62.8 million player option, Antetokounmpo can become a free agent as early as the summer of 2027. That means he is effectively entering the season as an expiring contract, but he will be able to sign a max extension in exactly six months.

Antetokounmpo has never led the NBA in scoring, but he has averaged more than 29 points per game in five different seasons and led the NBA in rebounds twice.

The 10-time All-Star earned MVP honors for his 2018-19 and 2019-20 campaigns, and he finished no lower than fourth in MVP voting for eight consecutive seasons before injuries played a role in ending that streak this year.

Giannis Antetokounmpo career timeline

  • 2013-26: Milwaukee Bucks
  • 2026-present: Miami Heat

Antetokounmpo spent his entire career with the Bucks before being traded.

Selected No. 15 overall in the 2013 NBA Draft, Antetokounmpo intrigued teams in a weak class but was ultimately too much of an unknown to land inside the lottery. The Bucks quickly reaped the benefits.

Antetokounmpo showed promise as a teenager during his rookie season and became a full-time starter in his second year as Milwaukee earned a surprise playoff berth.

That improvement continued steadily, as Antetokounmpo earned his first All-Star selection in 2016–17 and won the first of back-to-back MVP awards in 2019. Despite speculation that he could seek a trade, Antetokounmpo signed a super-max extension with the Bucks ahead of the 2020–21 season and fulfilled his goal of bringing a championship to Milwaukee seven months later with an NBA Finals victory over the Phoenix Suns.

While the Bucks have gradually drifted further from title contention in the years since, Antetokounmpo has remained a force when healthy. He has averaged more than 30 points per game in each of the past three seasons, earning a top-five MVP finish each year.

How old is Giannis Antetokounmpo?

Antetokounmpo is 31 years old and won’t turn 32 until after the start of the 2026–27 season.

While it may seem like he has been around for a long time — partly because he entered the NBA at such a young age — Antetokounmpo is hoping to put nagging injuries behind him and remain one of the league’s best players for at least a few more years.
