It’s safe to say New York Giants fans have mixed feelings about Joe Schoen; some believe his recent drafting has been strong and are thankful he led the team to the playoffs in his first year at the helm, while others can’t forget his earlier missteps.
Regardless, the team announced it reached a multi-year extension with him ahead of the 2026 season.
It remains to be seen exactly how long Schoen will remain in charge, but with coach John Harbaugh locked into the franchise for five years, a similar timeline can be safely assumed.
Here’s the latest on the Giants bringing their GM back for a few more years.

Joe Schoen contract details
On Thursday night, Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo reported that Schoen and the Giants agreed on a “multi-year extension.” This comes after New York hired John Harbaugh as their head coach during the 2026 offseason.

No official year or monetary amount has been released yet, but Schoen will remain in New York for multiple seasons.
As one of the more polarizing figures in the Giants organization, some fans may be confused about this move. However, New York is banking on Harbaugh’s success and leading Schoen’s men to a better season than their previous campaigns.

How long has Joe Schoen been Giants GM?
Schoen has been the Giants’ GM for four seasons thus far, from 2022 to 2025. However, after the Giants committed to the GM for a few more seasons, he will be in New York for even longer.
Schoen is heading into his fifth season atop the New York organization and is vying to return to the playoffs with his young squad.

Joe Schoen record as Giants GM
In four seasons with the Giants, Schoen has led New York to a 22-45-1 record.
Schoen began his tenure in the Big Apple with a 9-7-1 record in 2022. The team returned to the playoffs for the first time since the 2016 season and even upset the Minnesota Vikings in the Wild Card round. After that, however, the team began spiraling downward.
During Schoen’s next three seasons, from 2023 to 2025, the team posted a lackluster 13-38 record. Schoen’s Giants have yet to return to the playoffs since his first season at the helm.

Notable Joe Schoen roster moves
While Schoen has hit on many of his recent draft picks, his first couple of drafts in 2022 and 2023 left a bit more to be desired after four full seasons in the books.
In 2022, Schoen had two first-round picks to work with. With pick Nos. 5 and 7, he drafted defensive end Kayvon Thibodeaux and Evan Neal. Thibodeaux did tally 11.5 sacks during his second season in the NFL, but since then, he has not been able to return to that previous level. And Evan Neal, well, his seasons in New York have not been too pretty. Since being selected in 2022, Neal has played in 29 games (27 starts) and has a career pass block win rate of 82.9%, which ranks dead last among all qualifiers during that span, according to ESPN.
Schoen’s 2023 draft was not much better. First-round selection Deonte Banks, a cornerback, has not recorded an interception in two seasons and accumulated just five passes defended through 16 games in 2025. Giants fans can also tell many stories about their third-round pick, Jaylin Hyatt. Puka Nacua and Devon Achane were taken later in that draft; enough said.
The GM’s next two drafts have been much better in all-around production. In 2024, the Giants landed standout wide receiver Malik Nabers with the No. 6 pick, and he has already shown WR1 capabilities. The following season, New York locked down its young offensive core with QB Jaxson Dart and RB Cam Skattebo, along with defensive end Abdul Carter with the No. 3 pick.
