Maple Leafs’ Auston Matthews gets some boos from his home fans after Olympics

By | February 28, 2026

There were cheers, but there were also boos.

That’s certainly the conundrum presented to Toronto Maple Leafs fans by their captain, Auston Matthews, who just won an Olympic gold medal for Team USA by defeating Canada.

The Leafs were back home on Saturday, and that meant recognition for all their Olympians.

When Matthews was starting to be introduced, and the public address announcer said “gold medalist,” the boos sounded pretty loud.

By the time Matthews was shown on the screen, there were a lot of positive cheers, too.

Tough to say exactly the split, but it’s fascinating:

Clearly, Matthews understands the dilemma at play. That’s what happens when a kid from Phoenix plays his professional hockey in Toronto.

The fans are likely in a tough spot, too. In a vacuum, they’d think it’s awesome that their captain won a major international hockey tournament. They just don’t know how to feel about the fact that he beat the very country that Toronto is a part of to do it.

Matthews was a superb defensive presence as a forward in the gold medal game, which Team USA won 2-1 in overtime on Sunday, Feb. 22.

He wore the captain’s ‘C’ for the United States, as well, an impressive honor.

In the long run, Leafs fans will surely continue to support Matthews. But this Olympic recognition was a bit of a split decision.
