The 2024 Big Ten Championship features a pair of programs that haven’t faced off in nearly 30 years.
No. 1 Oregon, still unbeaten after its 12-game regular season slate, is set to face off against No. 3 Penn State in Saturday’s conference title game. In their first season as a member of the Big Ten, the Ducks have made quite the entrance, dominating their opponents and emerging as arguably college football’s most complete team.
Sixth-year quarterback Dillon Gabriel became a Heisman Trophy candidate in 2024, throwing for 3,275 yards, 24 touchdowns, and six interceptions while rushing for another seven scores. However, Oregon’s talent extends far beyond its quarterback. Head coach Dan Lanning’s team owns a collection of talented offensive weapons, including RB Jordan James and WR Tez Johnson, plus a dominant pass rush that racked up 39 total sacks in the regular season.
From top to bottom, Oregon owns an elite roster that’s very capable of bringing home a National Championship. However, the Ducks did have a few close calls this season, including their 37-34 win over Boise State, 32-31 win over Ohio State and 16-13 win over Wisconsin. In other words, Oregon may be vulnerable enough for Penn State to pull off an upset in this conference championship.
The Nittany Lions, making their first Big Ten Championship appearance since 2016, went 11-1 in the regular season. Their only loss was a 20-12 defeat to Ohio State — but those same Buckeyes were upset by Michigan in Week 14, earning head coach James Franklin’s squad a chance to go to Indianapolis.
The winner of Saturday’s conference title game between the Ducks and Nittany Lions will earn an automatic first-round bye in the upcoming College Football Playoff. The loser, though, could see their playoff outlook shift depending on how the CFP committee views the competitiveness of this matchup, and how the other conference championships shape up.
