The United States men’s national team’s World Cup slate kicks off with a bang on Monday, as Gregg Berhalter’s side aims to exorcise its tournament demons against Wales.
The last time the USMNT competed in a World Cup match, it suffered a devastating extra-time loss to Belgium in Brazil. Eight years is a long time, however, and the Americans are hoping their youthful bunch can outpace a veteran Welsh team in Qatar.
That will be no easy task, admittedly. Led by Gareth Bale — arguably the greatest Welsh player of the 21st century — the Dragons have been a stout adversary to their Home Nations counterparts over the years, famously making it to the European Championship semifinal in 2016 before bowing out to champions Portugal.
Nevertheless, with players like Christian Pulisic, Brenden Aaronson and Gio Reyna on form, Berhalter and company will be hoping to put all of the doubters to rest with a strong showing in the opening game for the U.S.
