Why Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama made $51 million sacrifice on contract extension

The Spurs just fell short of winning the 2026 NBA Finals, but few can argue the season was a failure, as a young Spurs core showed they’ll be a contender for the next few years.

Victor Wembanyama was a big part of the Spurs’ historic run to the NBA Finals, and the Spurs have rewarded him for that.

Wembanyama cashed out with his latest contract, but he showed his commitment to winning through a $51 million decision.

Why Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama made $51 million sacrifice on contract extension

ESPN’s Shams Charania reported on Friday evening that Wembanyama agreed to a 5-yr/$252 million extension.

Despite being eligible to make $303 million on that extension, he opted to make less.

This was done to give the franchise flexibility, as they’ll have to navigate the contracts of other young stars, as they become extension-eligible soon.

Earlier this afternoon, Wembanyama posted on social media, “Spurs family, I’m here to stay. Whatever it takes.”

As we saw this postseason and even in the Olympics, Wemby takes winning seriously, gets emotional over games at times, and isn’t just here to make money.

Wembanyama just finished his third NBA season and appears to be here to stay for at least a few more years.
