With Netflix’s The Sandman concluding with Season 2, showrunner Allan Heinberg has addressed the possibility of seeing Dream return in James Gunn’s DCU. In a recent interview, the veteran screenwriter opened up about the enthralling climax of the Tom Sturridge-led series before shedding light on whether fans will be able to catch Jacob Anderson’s take on Dream in the DCU.

Allan Heinberg on where Jacob Anderson’s Dream could return
While speaking with TV Insider, Heinberg revealed that even though he had never planned The Sandman to be part of the DCU, he would like to see a crossover take place in the future.
“I don’t know. We, from the outset, started Sandman, before James Gunn and Peter Safran took over, and we very clearly said we are separate,” The Sandman writer said while discussing Jacob Anderson’s potential return as Daniel Hall in the DCU. He also added, “We are not part of the DC Universe, which allowed us to do Joanna Constantine [Jenna Coleman], instead of John Constantine. It allowed us to sort of play by our own rules in relationship to the DCU.”
While Heinberg seemed sceptical regarding Dream’s return, he admitted that the decision to include characters from The Sandman, particularly Jacob Anderson’s Daniel Hall and Kirby Howell-Baptiste’s Death, in future DC projects rests in the hands of Gunn and Safran. “If there was a creator, or if James or Peter wanted there to be a crossover of some kind, that would be delightful to me. But it would be a decision of theirs rather than a decision of ours,” he explained.
In the final episode of The Sandman Season 2, Tom Sturridge’s Morpheus accepts the consequences of killing his son, Orpheus, by willingly giving up his life. In the process, he passes the mantle of Dream to Daniel Hall, bringing Morpheus’ story to a close.
