Cody Rhodes Was Getting Along With Other AEW EVPs Before Leaving The Company

By | February 15, 2022

Cody & Brandi Rhodes were integral members of AEW as they were with The Young Bucks and Tony Khan from the beginning. To the shock of many, they left the promotion as both the parties could not negotiate over the terms for a new contract.

The Rhodes had three-year deals, which ran their course on December 31, 2021. They had been continuously working for new terms for a good deal, while maintaining their appearance on the television as well.

Cody Rhodes even tried defending his title against Sammy Guevara. However, he ended up losing to the interim champion in a unification ladder match. Brandi Rhodes had also started an angle with Paige VanZant, which created the illusion that their contract situation was not critical.

Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter revealed that most people had no idea about the couple leaving the promotion. According to their source, the EVPs were “getting along the best they have in a long time.” While he described the general sentiment as “unhappiness”, their leave still remains largely unmystified.

That person [their source] did actually know this was coming for a few weeks and categorized it as unhappiness, even though everyone said that the EVPs were getting along the best they have in a long time. They were working last week on projects for the future. One person close to the situation used the term “heartbroken,” but didn’t know the machinations of the split.

Many AEW superstars reported that they could not believe on the dynamic duo leaving the promotion. Both Brandi & Cody Rhodes are expected to go to WWE, though nothing is set in stone.
