The USA and Canada maintain their top positions in women’s hockey, both beginning Olympic play undefeated. Having been on a crash course, they are set to face each other on Tuesday.

The USA women’s hockey team romped to three wins to start its Olympic journey, outscoring Czechia, Finland and its recent opponent, Switzerland, by a combined 15-1.

Canada has played in two contests and has allowed only one goal, beating both Switzerland and Czechia by a combined 9-1.

The rivalry between the USA and Canada is regarded as one of the most intense in Olympic history, due to their longstanding dominance, the unmatched count of gold-medal matchups and the pronounced parity between the two nations, especially in ice hockey.

In Canada, hockey is deeply woven into its cultural identity, so when they lose to the U.S., it can feel like a big national disappointment.

3:26 p.m.: Earlier in the game, Hilary Knight made history.

With an assist on the first goal of the game, Knight now is tied for the most points in U.S. Olympic Women’s Hockey history.

3:23 p.m.: In one of the better chances for Canada, Laura Stacey’s shot is set aside by Frankel.

Canada stays in the zone, but a shot is blocked by Murphy. She is then cross checked and draws her third penalty of the game.

For the fourth time, the United States head to the power play. The Canadiens are yet to have a man-advantage.

3:20 p.m.: Now, with a 2-on-1, Britta Curl-Salemme rips a shot off the post. The United States are sending a flurry of shots on Desbiens, with the majority of the game happening in the Canadian zone.

3:18 p.m.: The second power play of the intermission is killed by the Canadiens, but we have a blowout in Milan so far.

The United States lead 3-0 and are outshooting the opponent 16-5.

3:15 p.m. GOAL: 20 seconds into the power play, a scramble up front is covered up by Desbiens. But, it goes to review, and it’s a goal credited to Kirsten Simms, her first ever Olympic goal.

It’s determined that the puck fully crossed the net before the whistle blew, and the United States take a big lead. Moreover, Canada challenges; it’s unsuccessful and there is a minor penalty.

The United States are 1-for-2 on the power play and lead 3-0. Because of the challenge, they’re back on the man advantage.

3:09 p.m.: The Canadiens take another penalty early in the second, this one for interference.

It sends the United States to the power play 58 seconds into the second.

3:04 p.m.: The second period is underway.

Canada only had four shots in the first to the United States’ 11. Down 2-0, expect a flurry from the team in red.

2:47 p.m.: Right before the buzzer, Tessa Janicke had a chance point blank but it was saved. Though, the United States takes a 2-0 lead into the locker room.

Goals from Harvey and Bilka have the United States — who dominated the first as it went on — up through 20.

2:42 p.m. GOAL: The United States has taken a two-goal lead.

Abbey Murphy gets in the corner and wins the puck, sending it out front to a wide open Hanna Bilka, who goes top shelf on Desbiens. 

Harvey also picked up an assist on the play and has two points on the night.

2:37 p.m.: After Aerin Frankel covers up a loose puck, a Canadian player crashes into her and a scuffle breaks out.

The United States leads 1-0 with just over five minutes left in the first.

2:30 p.m.: Halfway through the first period, the United States have a 9-2 advantage in shots.

Since the initial Canada push, it’s been all the team in white.

2:26 p.m.: Canada has killed off the power play. While the United States got shots, including one off the post from Laila Edwards, Desbiens stood strong.

The leaders got three shots on goal during the man-advantage as the game remains 1-0.

2:21 p.m.: We have our first penalty of the game, and it’s on Canada.

It’s Blayre Turnbull who goes to the box, and the United States has the first power play with a chance to make an early statement.

2:17 p.m. GOAL: The United States are on the board! It’s Carolina Harvey who scores her second goal of the tournament.

Taking the puck at the blue line, Harvey walks in and her shot is redirected into the net.

Team USA leads 1-0 early on.

2:15 p.m.: In the first real zonetime for the United States, Knight gets a shot in the slot and it’s saved by Ann-Renée Desbiens.

Three minutes in, the score is 0-0.

2:11 p.m.: The puck is dropped and USA-Canada is officially underway.
