Khabib Nurmagomedov’s UFC career is over, the Russian fighter declared following his defeat of Justin Gaethje on Saturday at UFC 254.

After he submitted Gaethje, Nurmagomedov took off his gloves in the Octagon and said that this would be his last fight. He said he promised his mother beforehand that it would be his final bout following the death of his father, Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov, due to COVID-19 complications in July.

“There’s no way I can fight without my father,” Nurmagomedov said. “This is my last fight. If I give my word, I have to follow it.”

Nurmagomedov was clearly emotional following his win:

Nurmagomedov became the undisputed lightweight champion after his second-round submission of Gaethje; it was his second consecutive bout against an interim lightweight champion after beating Dustin Poirier via submission in September 2019.

Nurmagomedov ends his professional career with a 29-0 record.
