The wait is finally over. The NBA Finals begin tonight. This is the first NBA Finals appearance for the San Antonio Spurs since 2014. The Spurs have been in four NBA Finals since 1999 (2003, 2005, 2007, 2014). This marks the first NBA Finals appearance since 1999. In the lockout shortened 1998-99 season the Spurs defeated the Knicks in five games for the Spurs first NBA title.
The journey for the Knicks and their fans has been a different story. In the time that’s passed since 1999, the Spurs have enjoyed five titles while the Knicks have been much less effective. Following the 1999 season, the Knicks have only made two conference finals. The 2000 season and this year. There will be several storylines within these NBA Finals. Starting with Game 1, the biggest question will be is this a return to glory for the Knicks or the coronation of Victor Wembanyama as the face of the league?
